What documents are required to marry a foreign national in Portugal?
The documents required to marry a foreign national are essentially the same as those required for marriage between Portuguese citizens.
However, in the case of marrying a foreign national, they must provide proof of their legal capacity to marry, in accordance with their national law.
Therefore, the required documents are:
- Certificate of capacity to marry: Issued by the competent authorities of their home country, with a validity period not exceeding six months, unless a different period is set by their national law.
- Identification documents: For both parties. In the case of the foreign national, they must present their residence permit, passport, or an equivalent document, unless represented by a proxy.
- Prenuptial agreement certificate: In cases where it was not drawn up at the Civil Registry Office.
Furthermore, the foreign national must also present a birth certificate that meets the formal requirements demanded by the law of their country.
Once all documents have been gathered, the couple may initiate the preliminary marriage process.
