Yesterday, Decree-Law n. º 19/2016 was published and carried changes regarding the request and issuing of passports.
Here are some highlights:
- frequent travelers may own a passport comprising more pages – 48 instead of the usual 32 – which means, in practice, the renewal is not so often, saving time and money;
- it will be possible to request the standard passport online in case the passport is lost, destroyed or stolen abroad. This request will then be forwarded to the closest consulate making the process more effective. This possibility will be available when the new decree regulating this request is published;
- the passport number will have an additional letter, making the grouping one of two letters and six figures as the existing system will soon reach the limit of possible combinations;
- a sticker with information in braille for visually impaired people will be added containing the holder’s name, passport number and validity.
