The European Commission intends to update copyright rules to better protect media outlets in their relationship with search engines and news aggregators, with Google at the centre of the debate. In practice, these platforms may be required to pay in order to distribute news content produced by media organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Press associations argue that the regime adopted in 2001 no longer offers adequate protection in today\u2019s digital environment. In the same vein, artists may gain stronger protection against the online publication of their work on platforms such as YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
