Medically Assisted Procreation (MAP) encompasses treatments and techniques to achieve pregnancy for couples with fertility issues or women regardless of marital status/orientation (Law 32/2006, updated 2016).

Key Techniques

  • Artificial Insemination: Sperm deposit in vagina.
  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): Selected sperm into uterus.
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): Lab fertilization; embryo transfer to uterus.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Single sperm injected into egg.
  • Embryo/Gamete/Zygote Transfer: Single embryo to avoid multiples.
  • Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD): Embryo screening for genetic risks.
  • Surrogacy: Woman carries pregnancy for others (highly restricted).

Eligibility


Heterosexual/female couples and single women (18+); women up to 50; no male donor age limit. Techniques subsidiary to other treatments, except for women (no infertility required).

Access and Costs

  • Public (SNS): Free up to age 40 (IVF/ICSI) or 42 (IUI); meds ~€400.
  • Private: IUI €600–€1,200; IVF €3,200–€5,200; egg donation from €6,000; donor sperm €350–€1,500.

Legal Notes


Male couples excluded from surrogacy in Portugal, often resorting to costly foreign options (€50,000–€200,000), despite constitutional family rights.
