Domestic violence is often associated only with physical aggression, but the law covers many other forms of abuse
2023/06/22

Domestic violence is a public crime, which means that:

  1. Anyone can report it.
  2. Criminal proceedings may be initiated even without the victim’s complaint or consent.

A lawyer’s role is to support the victim throughout the proceedings, explain each step, clarify rights (criminal and civil), and help obtain protection measures and compensation.

What situations may constitute domestic violence?

In addition to physical violence, the crime may include:

  • Emotional abuse: Behaviours that cause fear or humiliation, such as threats involving children or public humiliation.
  • Social abuse: Controlling the victim’s social life, preventing contact with friends or family, monitoring calls, or locking the victim at home.
  • Sexual abuse: Forcing or coercing the partner into unwanted sexual acts.
  • Financial abuse: Controlling money without consent, withholding salary, or forcing the victim to justify every expense.
  • Stalking: Following the victim to work, monitoring movements, or constant unwanted surveillance.
  • Online disclosure of intimate content: Sharing intimate images or videos, often after a breakup.

How can I protect myself?

Victims and their families have the right to protection against retaliation and continued abuse. Within the criminal case, coercive measures (such as restraining orders, removal from the home, or electronic monitoring) can be imposed to prevent any contact between the aggressor and the victim.
