It is now possible to apply online for a new passport in the event of loss, destruction, or theft while abroad.
2018/03/15

Decree‑Law no. 19/2016 has introduced several changes to the rules on issuing and renewing Portuguese passports. The main points are:

  • Frequent travellers – A new passport model with 48 pages (instead of the usual 32) is available for frequent travellers, allowing less frequent renewals, shorter waiting times, and lower overall costs. This is another SIMPLEX measure.
  • Online applications in case of loss/theft – Holders who lose their passport abroad, or whose document is destroyed or stolen, can now request a new passport online. The application is forwarded to the nearest consular post, making the whole process faster. This option will only be fully operational after the ministerial order setting out the detailed rules has been published.
  • Alphanumeric identification – The numbering system changes from one letter and six digits to two letters and six digits, as the previous combinations were close to being exhausted.

Braille sticker – A braille sticker will be added for visually impaired citizens, indicating the holder’s name, passport number, and expiry date.
